Giants' John Mara Reveals Cancer Diagnosis, 'I'm Feeling Strong and Optimistic'
New York Giants president, CEO and co-owner John Mara announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
Mara stated that he will remain active with the team throughout his treatment and that he is "feeling strong and optimistic." The 70-year-old also expressed his gratitude for the "incredible support" that he has received.
Mara took over the team's presidency in 2005 after the death of his father, former Giants owner Wellington Mara. The Mara family has owned the franchise since Tim Mara, Wellington's Mara's father, founded the team in 1925.
Many people sent their best wishes to Mara after he revealed the news.
Mara officially joined the Giants in 1991 as General Counsel. He later became an executive vice president and chief operating officer before becoming team president in 2005. The team won Super Bowls to cap the 2007 and 2011 seasons in Mara's era.
In addition to his role as Giants' co-owner, Mara also serves the NFL via memberships on various committees. Of note, he currently serves on the Competition Committee, a role he has held for a quarter-century. Mara is also the chairman of the league's Management Council Executive Committee.
Outside of football, Mara serves on the board of directors for Saint Vincent's Hospital (in Harrison, New York), Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York and the Newark, N.J. Covenant House Action Research Think Tank (CHART).
