Updated MLB Playoff Picture 2025, Wild Card Standings, Full Bracket for AL and NL

Joe TanseySep 21, 2025

The Detroit Tigers and New York Mets are in the middle of two historic tailspins.

Detroit's lead in the American League Central is down to one game over the Cleveland Guardians.

Cleveland made up more of the gap in Minnesota this weekend. The pair of divisional rivals meet up this week in Cleveland to potentially decide the AL Central title.

The Mets left Sunday out of the National League playoff spots. The Cincinnati Reds tied the Mets on record on Sunday and they own the tiebreaker over the Mets.

Two other divisional titles and three wild-card spots are realistically still in play.

The Seattle Mariners' Sunday night win over the Houston Astros gave them a three-game lead and the head-to-head tiebreaker in the AL West.

Seattle could clinch the AL West before the weekend with the baseball it is playing.

American League

Cleveland Guardians v Minnesota Twins - Game One

Division Leaders

  1. Toronto (90-66)
  2. Seattle (87-69)
  3. Detroit (85-71)

Wild-Card Race

  1. New York Yankees (87-68)
  2. Boston (85-71)
  3. Cleveland (84-72)
  4. Houston (84-72)
  5. Texas (79-76)

Detroit received some help from the Minnesota Twins to keep a slender lead in the AL Central going into its series with Cleveland.

The Tigers were swept by Atlanta at home this weekend. They head into Cleveland on a six-game losing streak and in danger of spiraling out of the playoffs.

Cleveland's 10-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday in Minnesota, but the Guardians still come into the vital AL Central series in better form.

The Guardians just swept the Tigers at Comerica Field. They finish with six at home versus the Tigers and Texas Rangers.

Detroit visits Cleveland and then heads to Fenway Park to face the Boston Red Sox in a series that might decide the final AL wild-card spot.

If Detroit drops two of three to Cleveland, it will be in the thick of the wild-card race with Boston and Houston.

The Astros lost three games to the Mariners at home this weekend. Houston's loss on Sunday night put the Astros and Guardians level on record, though Cleveland has the tiebreaker.

Boston also lost on Sunday night in Tampa. The Red Sox head to Toronto with a one-game edge on both the Astros and Guardians in the wild-card race.

The Blue Jays are up 2.5 games on the New York Yankees, who will put pressure on the leader since they play their final six games against the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles.

National League

2 of 2
Chicago Cubs v Cincinnati Reds

Division Leaders

  1. Milwaukee (95-61)
  2. Philadelphia (92-63)
  3. Los Angeles Dodgers (88-67)

Wild-Card Race

  1. Chicago Cubs (88-68)
  2. San Diego (85-71)
  3. Cincinnati (80-76)
  4. New York Mets (80-76)
  5. Arizona (79-77)
  6. San Francisco (77-79)
  7. St. Louis (76-80)
  8. Miami (76-80)

The Reds moved level with the Mets in the wild-card race on Sunday.

New York lost two of three to the Washington Nationals to allow the Reds to get in front in the race for the final wild-card spot.

The Mets finish the regular season with road series against the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins.

The good news for the Mets is that both the Cubs and Marlins won't have much to play for next week. However, New York is 31-44 away from Citi Field.

Cincinnati, who leads on a tiebreaker, gets the Pittsburgh Pirates at home for three and then visits the Milwaukee Brewers for three games.

Milwaukee might have the No. 1 seed and the NL Central wrapped up before the Reds arrive.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are still in the hunt as well, but they face the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres next week. The Dodgers still need to clinch the NL West and the Padres have not yet clinched a playoff berth.

San Francisco, St. Louis and Miami are all mathematically alive, but they likely need to win out, or finish 5-1, and have some help to miraculously jump the Reds, Mets and Diamondbacks.
