Giants Updated Roster, Payroll After Reported Luis Arraez Contract in MLB Free Agency
Luis Arráez is on the move after a season and a half with the San Diego Padres.
Per ESPN's Jorge Castillo, Arráez signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants in free agency. It's worth $12 million, per The Athletic's Katie Woo.
After spending most of his time with the Padres at first base, Arráez is expected to switch to second with the Giants, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Here's a look at the Giants' updated roster now that Arráez is joining Rafael Devers, Willy Adames and Matt Chapman in the infield.
1B: Rafael Devers
2B: Luis Arráez
3B: Matt Chapman
SS: Willy Adames
C: Patrick Bailey
RF: Jung Hoo Lee
CF: Harrison Bader
LF: Heliot Ramos
DH: Bryce Eldridge
The Giants had a projected cash payroll of just under $195 million, which ranked 11th in MLB, prior to the trade, per Spotrac.
San Francisco had $7.8 million in space between the luxury tax line before the trade, according to Spotrac. The club would be taxed over that threshold at 20 percent as a first-time payor, per Spotrac.
The contract comes after a solid season that saw Arráez hit eight home runs and 61 RBI while slashing .292/.327/.392. It wasn't the best season for the three-time batting champ as he recorded a career-worst batting average, but the 28-year-old still managed to play a key role as the Padres finished 90-72 with a wild card exit to the Chicago Cubs.
The Giants mark the fourth club Arráez will have played for in his eight-year career.
He made his debut for the Minnesota Twins in 2019 and stayed in the Twin Cities for four seasons, establishing himself as one of the most consistent hitters in the majors.
The Twins traded Arráez to the Miami Marlins ahead of the 2023 season, and he managed to put together the best season of his career in his first season with his new club. On his way to becoming a Silver Slugger and a batting champ, Arráez hit 10 homers, 69 RBI and recorded a .354 batting average, all of which were career bests.
As the Marlins struggled early on in the 2024 campaign, they dealt Arráez to the San Diego Padres, where he has spent the last two seasons.
Now Arráez is heading to a new team, and he'll look to reestablish himself as a Silver Slugger and batting champ candidate with the Giants.
