Russell Wilson, Giants Open 0-2 as Dak, Cowboys Win Thriller in OT to Excite NFL Fans

Scott PolacekSep 14, 2025

Perhaps no team in the NFL needed a narrative-shifting win more than the Dallas Cowboys after an offseason dominated by the Micah Parsons trade, and they earned one in dramatic fashion in Sunday's 40-37 overtime victory over the New York Giants in an NFC East showdown at AT&T Stadium.

Kicker Brandon Aubrey played the role of hero with a stunning 64-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to force the extra period before he drilled the game-winner in overtime.

His heroics capped off a thriller that featured five lead changes in the fourth quarter alone before he tied it.

Aubrey may have been the hero, but Dak Prescott deserves plenty of credit as well for getting the offense into range at the end of regulation and again in overtime. He also threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns while helping propel the Cowboys to a 1-1 record.

As for the Giants, they are now 0-2 despite a brilliant individual performance from Russell Wilson that included 450 yards and three scores through the air.

Fans reacted to the unbelievable contest:

The game was largely defined by an inability to make plays for the first three quarters, which made the fourth quarter all the more shocking.

Cam Skattebo started the offensive onslaught with his first career touchdown, and Miles Sanders answered with a score of his own before the quarterbacks started playing a version of anything you can do, I can do better.

Wilson unleashed his patented moon-ball touchdowns to Wan'Dale Robinson and Malik Nabers, the second of which came from 48 yards with 25 seconds remaining in answer to a Prescott touchdown pass to George Pickens. Yet the New York defense couldn't prevent the Cowboys from moving into field-goal range in those last 25 seconds.

Of course, field-goal range for Aubrey is different than it is for most kickers.

Nabers finished with 167 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Robinson added 142 yards and a score. Offensive numbers like that should have been enough to win for the Giants, but they stood in their own way throughout the contest.

In fact, they finished with 14 penalties for 160 yards, although Dallas had 12 penalties for 106 yards in what was an ugly game before the fourth-quarter magic.

It started early for the Giants, as they committed six penalties on their opening drive alone. Four of them came from offensive tackle James Hudson, who was benched after the visitors had to settle for a field goal instead of an early touchdown in large part because of his two unnecessary roughness mistakes.

New York failed a fourth-down attempt inside the Cowboys' 10-yard line and then settled for another field goal inside the red zone in the third quarter before helping the Cowboys on a drive that ended in a Javonte Williams touchdown run with roughing the passer and pass interference penalties.

Were it not for those types of mistakes, the Giants could have pulled away when they were the better team prior to the fourth quarter.

But they left the door wide open, and Aubrey kicked it all the way down at the most important moments.
