NFL Exec Calls Packers 'The Anti-San Francisco' 49ers After Win vs. Commanders

Adam WellsSep 13, 2025

As the Green Bay Packers enjoy all of the good vibes they have built up amid a 2-0 start, one NFL executive decided to take a swipe at the San Francisco 49ers while praising them.

Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, an executive on an opposing team described the Packers as "the anti-San Francisco" with how they have built a roster loaded with young talent.

The idea is that the Packers rely heavily on their development staff to build up draftees, and they are diligent about making trades that require them to give up future picks.

Green Bay gave up two future first-round draft picks and Kenny Clark to acquire Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys.

By comparison, the 49ers' most notable trade during the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch era was in 2021 when they swapped first-round picks that year and gave up first-rounders in 2022 and 2023 to the Miami Dolphins.

The 49ers used the No. 3 pick they got from Miami to take Trey Lance. He appeared in eight games (four starts) over two seasons before being traded to the Cowboys in August 2023.

San Francisco's other big trade during the Shanahan era was sending four picks to the Carolina Panthers for Christian McCaffrey.

The deal wasn't a bust because McCaffrey won Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 and helped the 49ers get to the Super Bowl, but giving up the equivalent of a first-round draft pick was a steep price because of how badly the Lance deal turned out to be.

As a result of those trades, the Niners made just 18 draft picks between 2022 and 2023. Their top two picks from 2022 (Drake Jackson, Tyrion Davis-Price) and their second pick from 2023 (Jake Moody) are no longer on the roster.

By comparison, the Packers made 24 draft picks during those two years. That group includes Lukas Van Ness, Jayden Reed, Tucker Kraft, Quay Walker, Devonte Wyatt, Romeo Doubs and Zach Tom.

That core group all being on rookie contracts through at least 2025 is what allowed the Packers to make their big swing for Parsons, who is only 26 years old and well established as one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL.

One could argue that even though the 49ers are once again navigating a roster decimated by injuries, they have been better than the Packers over the last six years. They appeared in four NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowls since 2019.

The Packers, by comparison, have been in the NFC Championship Game twice with zero Super Bowl appearances during that same period. Matt LaFleur is 0-3 against Shanahan in the playoffs.

There's no denying that the Packers are set up much better than the 49ers to be great in the short-term future, possibly even the best team in the NFC in the early point of this season.

Green Bay's championship window is wide open in 2025 and beyond, while San Francisco is trying to piece things together while filling out its next great core after embracing a youth movement following its injury-plagued 2024.
