Chiefs' Xavier Worthy Not Considered for Surgery on Shoulder Injury, Andy Reid Says
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Xavier Worthy isn't currently considering undergoing surgery on the shoulder injury he suffered in last Friday's season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.
"No. Not right now," Reid said when asked at the 1:10 mark of his Wednesday press conference whether Worthy was considering surgery.
When asked if Worthy would be placed on injured reserve, Reid said, "No. He's just rehabbing here."
Worthy suffered a dislocated right shoulder after colliding with teammate Travis Kelce on the third offensive snap of Friday's game, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the loss.
Reid told reporters neither Worthy nor rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals, who sat out Week 1 with knee tendinitis, participated in Wednesday's practice.
Neither have been placed on IR, which would indicate the Chiefs aren't currently expecting either wide receiver to miss at least four games.
"Both are doing better, they're working on it and making progress, but not ready to go today for sure," Reid said.
Rapoport reported Sunday on NFL GameDay Morning that Worthy was still seeking a second opinion, but that "the most likely option is for him to be able to brace it up and return this season."
"However, tests pending, and surgery is still as of right now an option," Rapoport said Sunday.
With Worthy and Royals both sidelined for the majority of the game, the majority of targets went to Marquise "Hollywood" Brown (99 yards on 10 catches).
JuJu Smith-Schuster finished the game with five catches for 55 yards, and Kelce hauled in two catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. Tyquan Thornton, Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco also received two targets apiece.
Worthy led the Chiefs' receiving corps with 59 catches for 638 yards with six touchdowns last season, then added 19 catches for 287 yards and three touchdowns during the playoffs.
His success, particularly in the playoffs, combined with Rashee Rice's six-game suspension had him on track for a breakout season as a top target for Patrick Mahomes this fall.
How quickly Worthy and Royals are able to return from their respective injuries could eventually determine whether the Chiefs target another wide receiver before the Nov. 5 trade deadline. In the short term, the Chiefs could again hand a larger workload to Brown and Smith-Schuster if Worthy is unable to play in Sunday's Super Bowl LIX rematch against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles.
