Chiefs' Travis Kelce Takes Blame for Xavier Worthy's Injury, 'No Excuse' for Mistake
Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce owned up to his mistake that caused wide receiver Xavier Worthy's shoulder injury in Friday's season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.
On just the third offensive play for the Chiefs, Worthy went down after colliding with Kelce while they were running their routes for a third-down pass play. He reportedly suffered a dislocated shoulder, and Kansas City head coach Andy Reid described him as "day-to-day" entering Sunday's Super Bowl rematch against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles.
During this week's episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce explained what went wrong on the play and accepted the blame for the mishap that proved costly for his teammate.

"I'm supposed to be running my route at depth for Worthy," Kelce said (h/t NFL Network's Ian Rapoport). "So, it's frustrating for me. I was trying to kind of set up my guy to be able to get into position, and it all just happened pretty quick. I just gotta be better, man. I'm 13 years in the league. There is no excuse for me running into my own guys like that."
The Chiefs went on to lose to the Chargers 27-21, snapping a seven-game win streak against Los Angeles that dated back to 2021.
Losing Worthy for any amount of time would leave Kansas City with even less depth in its receiving corps while fellow wideout Rashee Rice serves his six-game suspension. Kelce and the rest of the team's veterans will need to step up in the passing attack as the Chiefs try to get back on track while they eye another run to the Super Bowl.
