The 49ers escaped Week 1 with a 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy threw the game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Jake Tonges with 1:34 remaining.
Shanahan announced on Sept. 8 that Purdy's status for Week 2 was uncertain after suffering injuries to his left shoulder and toe against the Seahawks.
San Francisco came out of that opening-week victory banged up. In addition to Purdy's injuries, George Kittle will be out for multiple weeks with a hamstring issue. Jauan Jennings, who left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury, is awaiting further medical tests before determining his status.
Going into Week 1, there were concerns about Christian McCaffrey's calf after he popped up on the injury report. The 2023 Offensive Player of the Year started and finished with 142 yards from scrimmage in the win over Seattle.
Purdy's injury opens the door for Mac Jones to get a start for the 49ers. The former first-round pick signed with San Francisco as a free agent to be the team's backup quarterback.
Jones started seven games for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. He threw for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in 10 appearances during the 2024 campaign.
