Mercury's Alyssa Thomas Breaks Caitlin Clark's WNBA Single-Season Assists Record

Joseph ZuckerSep 6, 2025

One record-setting mark from Caitlin Clark's historic rookie season has already fallen.

Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas notched her 338th assist of the 2025 season in Saturday's game against the Connecticut Sun. That moves her past Clark for the most dimes in one year.

Thomas also sit pies third and fourth on that list.

Quite a few single-season records have fallen in the last few years with the WNBA adding more games to the schedule.

Courtney Vandersloot made 33 appearances in 2019, when she finished with a then-record 300 assists. When Thomas and Clark bested that number, it came after the season expanded to 40 games.

While the season length is now up to 44 games, Thomas needed just 37 to get there Saturday. The Mercury play twice more, so she could hit 350-plus assists when all is said and done.

This achievement further underlines the six-time All-Star's status as the best point forward in WNBA history. Her per-game assist average (5.04) ranks 10th all-time, and she's seventh in overall total (1,794 entering Saturday).

The 2025 campaign is likely to go down as Thomas' best as well. Entering the day, she was averaging 15.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 9.2 assists while shooting 53.9 percent from the field.

Those efforts probably won't result in an MVP win, but Thomas is all but assured of a top-five finish in the voting for the fourth straight year.

And at least for a little while, the 33-year-old will occupy a special place in the league's record books.
