Patrick Mahomes, Kelce, Chiefs Offense Disappoints NFL Fans in Week 1 Loss to Chargers

Zach BacharSep 5, 2025

A late comeback attempt from Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs fell short on Friday night, falling to the Los Angeles Chargers by the final score of 27-21 in Brazil.

With the Chiefs trying to get a late defensive stop, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert picked up a first down with his legs that sealed the final result.

Mahomes finished 24-of-39 for 258 yards and a touchdown while Travis Kelce hauled in two receptions for 47 yards and a score, but the rest of Kansas City's offense was inconsistent throughout the game.

Fans and pundits weren't impressed.

Kansas City's offense started off slow, punting on each of the team's first three drives of the game. The Chiefs' passing attack also suffered a tough blow early, as second-year wide receiver Xavier Worthy sustained a shoulder injury in the first quarter and was later ruled out for the rest of the game.

Los Angeles held a 10-point lead with the second quarter winding down, although Kansas City appeared to gain some momentum just before halftime.

After Mahomes found tight end Noah Gray with no timeouts left to get the Chiefs on the verge of kicker Harrison Butker's range, their special teams unit ran out onto the field and quickly executed a 59-yard field goal as time expired.

Kansas City forced a punt on the opening possession of the second half and finally found the end zone, as Mahomes cut the deficit to one point with an 11-yard touchdown run. The signal-caller finished the contest with a team-high 57 rush yards on six attempts.

The Chargers recorded a touchdown on the ensuing possession, but the Chiefs came right back with another scoring drive that was highlighted by an acrobatic toss from Mahomes on third down and a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kelce. A game-tying two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, though.

The Chargers took another two-possession lead with a touchdown pass from Herbert to Quentin Johnston, and Kansas City would only be able to muster a field goal on its next drive before Los Angeles ran out the clock.

The Chiefs struggled to move the chains, converting just five of 14 opportunities on third down.

Meanwhile, their defense had no answer for Herbert. He finished 25-of-34 for 318 yards and three touchdowns without getting picked off, adding 32 yards on the ground.

With the defeat, Kansas City's streak of 17 consecutive wins in one-score games came to an end.
