Travis Kelce 'Feeling Young and Ready to Rock' Entering Final Year of Chiefs Contract

Adam WellsSep 4, 2025

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is doing a good job of deflecting any questions about his future in the NFL after the 2025 season.

Asked by reporters on Thursday if he will retire at the end of the season, Kelce only said this is the final year of his contract and he's "feeling young and ready to rock."

There was some retirement speculation around Kelce following Kansas City's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, but he confirmed in February that he would be returning for his 13th NFL season.

Kelce, in a statement to Pat McAfee, said at the time he was going to "get in the best shape of my life" in the offseason with the goal of washing away the "bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game" because he didn't want to "go out like that."

The last line could be an indication that Kelce has already started thinking about the upcoming season as his final one in the NFL.

ESPN's Nate Taylor noted on Aug. 26 that people within the Chiefs organization have recently been expressing "their appreciation for Kelce's importance to the franchise and have said they hope to experience plenty of joy while cherishing his performances."

There were no indications during the offseason that Kelce or the Chiefs tried to engage each other in contract talks. He signed a two-year, $34.3 million deal in April 2024.

Kelce, amid reports he lost 25 pounds during the offseason, did admit to dropping weight, but said it wasn't that much. The 35-year-old has been planning for his post-NFL life for some time now.

The Kelce brothers launched the New Heights podcast in 2022. Travis has been doing some acting on the side, notably with supporting turns on the FX series Grotesquerie in 2024 and Happy Gilmore 2 earlier this year.

Oh, and Kelce also recently got engaged to possibly the most famous person in the world after her appearance on his podcast.

Kelce is hoping to rebound after arguably the worst season of his career. The 10-time Pro Bowler had his fewest receiving yards (823) and touchdowns (three) since his rookie year when he only played in one game.

Fans will get to see if Kelce's offseason work paid off when the Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers play on Friday night from Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil.
