Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Announce Engagement in IG Photos Ahead of NFL Season
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are getting married.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and pop star announced their engagement Tuesday on Instagram.
"Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married," Swift wrote in her Instagram caption.
CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported Tuesday that Kelce and Swift's engagement "came as a big surprise to a number of folks within the Chiefs organization" who learned about the news from the Instagram post.
Kelce's father, Ed, told News 5 Cleveland's John Kosich that the proposal actually occurred nearly two weeks ago in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
"Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago," his father, Ed Kelce said. "He was going to put it off until this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off until this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event. And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event... when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you."
He added: "He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, 'Let's go out and have a glass of wine.' They got out there, and that's when he asked her, and it was beautiful. They started FaceTiming me and their mother and her folks to make sure everybody knew. So, to see them together is great."
Travis and Jason Kelce's New Heights podcast celebrated the news by posting a clip of the first time Kelce publicly discussed Swift on a July 2023 episode of the show.
Kelce told a story on the episode about how he didn't get the chance to give Swift a friendship bracelet he had made with his phone number on it.
New Heights also posted an Instagram comment Kelce shared in November 2023, when he told Swift's fans to "dream big" in response to a clip from a podcast in which he talked about how the friendship bracelet led to his relationship with the singer:
Swift called Kelce's attempted bracelet gift a "romantic gesture" when first appearing on the Kelce brothers' podcast on Aug. 15.
"This kind of felt more like I was in an 80's John Hughes movie, and he was just standing outside of my window with a boombox, being like, 'I want to date you,'" Swift said.
Swift made her first appearance at a Chiefs game alongside Travis Kelce's mother, Donna Kelce, in September 2023.
The singer was a regular attendee at Chiefs games since that date, and was on the Arrowhead Stadium field with Kelce to celebrate the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory in 2024.
Swift revealed the cover of her upcoming album, "The Life of a Showgirl," during her appearance on the New Heights podcast.
The news of her engagement could further fuel annual fan theories that she may be named the Super Bowl halftime performer ahead of next February's championship game at Levi's Stadium.
