Najee Harris Full Participant at Practice amid Eye Injury Ahead of Chargers vs. Chiefs

Andrew PetersSep 2, 2025

Najee Harris is working his way back from an eye injury he suffered during a fireworks incident this summer, and he made a big stride on Tuesday.

Per NFL.com, the Los Angeles Chargers running back was a full participant at practice on Tuesday ahead of the Chargers' matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.

Harris was hospitalized after suffering an eye injury during a 4th of July event. His agent called the injury "superficial" and said he expected him to be on the field for the start of the season.

"Najee Harris was present at a 4th of July event where a fireworks mishap resulted in injuries to several attendees," agent Doug Hendrickson said in a statement, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season."

Harris started training camp on the active/NFI (non-football injury) list but returned to practice recently.

Harris met with the media on Monday and reiterated that the injury was "superficial" and did not affect his vision. He added that he's "ramping up" to play on Friday.

"I'm ramping up to it," he told reporters. "This is probably my fifth day at practice, just trying to get back in that football shape, but I'm feeling good, though, and we'll just see where it leads."

Harris is hoping to make his Chargers debut against the Chiefs in São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday. The former first-round pick signed a one-year deal worth up to $9.25 million with the Chargers in March after spending the first four years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Harris, who has never missed a regular-season game, is coming off his fourth consecutive year with 1,000 or more rushing yards, collecting 1,043 yards and six touchdowns in 2024.
