Chargers' Najee Harris Suffered 'Superficial' Eye Injury in Fireworks 'Mishap'

Andrew PetersJul 10, 2025

Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris suffered a "superficial" eye injury after a fireworks "mishap" at a 4th of July event last week, his agent said.

While the extent of the injury isn't clear, his agent said he's expected to be on the field for the start of the season.

"Najee Harris was present at a 4th of July event where a fireworks mishap resulted in injuries to several attendees," agent Doug Hendrickson said in a statement, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season."

Rick Hurd of the Mercury News reported Harris suffered the injury in the early morning of July 5 in Antioch, Calif., and was taken to John Muir Hospital in Concord. He was then taken to Stanford Hospital for further treatment, according to Hurd.

While it's unclear whether Harris' eye injury will prevent him from participating in offseason activities like training camp and preseason, it's a good sign that his agent said he'll be ready to go by the Chargers' first game on Sept. 5.

Harris, a 2021 first-round pick who spent the first four years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, signed a one-year deal worth up to $9.25 million with the Chargers in March.

The 2021 Pro Bowler has recorded 1,000 or more rushing yards in each of his first four seasons, including last year when he rushed for 1,043 yards and six touchdowns.

He'll presumably lead the way in the Chargers' backfield this year alongside rookie running back Omarion Hampton, a first-round pick out of North Carolina.

Los Angeles is coming off its best season since 2018, going 11-6 before losing to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round. The Chargers are looking to take a leap in Year 2 of the Jim Harbaugh era, and the addition of Harris should help.
