Frances Tiafoe Says It Will Be 'Hard to Swallow' US Open Upset Loss in 3rd Round
Frances Tiafoe reflected on his surprising loss to Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round of the 2025 US Open on Friday.
"It's going to be hard to swallow how I played today and being out of the US Open, for sure, this early," Tiafoe said, per Lukas Weese of The Athletic.
Struff eliminated the American from the tournament in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) victory.
The defeat marked Tiafoe's earliest exit in the US Open since 2019. He's fared particularly well at the tournament in past years, advancing to the semifinals in both 2022 and 2024.
Struff earned the win by preventing long rallies with Tiafoe, as he won 88 percent of his first serves. He also faced just two break points during the entire match.
It was an impressive performance from the 35-year-old, as he needed to win three qualifying matches in order to make the US Open before advancing to the fourth round on Friday.
Struff will now prepare for another challenge as he's set to face Novak Djokovic in his next match, while Tiafoe is heading home.
