Marcus Epps Reportedly Signs Eagles Contract After Requesting Release from Patriots

Scott PolacekAug 27, 2025

Marcus Epps is reportedly returning to the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday the veteran safety is signing with the NFC East team after the New England Patriots announced he was among their released players to get to the 53-man roster limit ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reported Epps requested his release from the Patriots.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about Epps requesting his release and told reporters Wednesday it was "news to me."

He continued and said, "I think that we just try to put the roster together. I guess when it doesn't work out, you know, you break up with somebody, your girlfriend doesn't want to be with you. And then you say, 'Well, I don't want to be with you, either.' Like, I'm not gonna get into all that."

The release allows Epps to return to the Eagles, where he played from November 2019 through the 2022 season. His best statistical season was his final one with the NFC East team, as he tallied 94 tackles, six passes defended and one forced fumble.

Epps helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl that season and started in the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Wyoming product played for the Las Vegas Raiders during the last two seasons, although a torn ACL limited him to just three games in 2024. He was something of a question mark coming into the 2025 campaign because he is working his way back from that injury, and now he is on the move once again after not sticking with the Patriots.

Epps might not be a surefire starter in Philadelphia's secondary like he was during his first stint with the team, but he provides veteran leadership to the unit and additional depth.

He won't have much time to catch up, though, as the Eagles start their season on Sept. 4 against the rival Dallas Cowboys.
