Daniil Medvedev Fined by US Open After Outburst During Round 1 Loss to Benjamin Bonzi
After an outburst in which he berated the official and smashed his tennis racket, Daniil Medvedev has been fined by the US Open.
Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the US Open fined Medvedev $42,500, more than a third of his $110,000 tournament prize money, for the meltdown. He was fined $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct by tournament referee Jake Garner and another $12,500 for racket abuse.
The incident occurred during Medvedev's first-round matchup against Benjamin Bonzi.
Bonzi led the third set 5-4 and was a point away from winning the match when a photographer at Louis Armstrong Stadium wandered onto the side of the court after a fault from Bonzi. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth told the photographer to get off the court before allowing Bonzi to have another first serve because of the delay.
After the announcement from Allensworth, the crowd began chanting "Second serve" and Medvedev approached the chair, clearly upset by the call.
"He wants to go home, guys. He doesn't like to be here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour," he shouted into the microphones behind the chair.
The incident delayed the match for more than six minutes.
Once play resumed, Medvedev ended up winning the set and took the fourth, too, but Bonzi won the match 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4. After facing his third consecutive Grand Slam loss in the first round, Medvedev proceeded to repeatedly slam his racket against his sideline chair.
Medvedev is a former world No. 1 and won the US Open in 2021. He came into Sunday's matchup as the world No. 13.
