Tommy DeVito Claimed by Patriots on Waivers After Release from Giants

Julia StumbaughAug 27, 2025

The New England Patriots claimed quarterback Tommy DeVito off waivers on Wednesday following his release by the New York Giants, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

DeVito was cut by the Giants on Tuesday after falling behind third-string rookie Jaxson Dart in the quarterback depth chart.

He will now head to New England, where Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs were the only signal callers on the initial 53-man roster.

The Patriots plan to release wide receiver Kendrick Bourne to make room for DeVito on the roster, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported.

New England also claimed former Rams defensive back Charles Woods off waivers on Wednesday.

When asked about the Patriots' waiver moves on Wednesday, Vrabel referred to the DeVito claim as "strengthening the roster" at a "premium position."

The Patriots got a close look at DeVito when he played against his new team in last Thursday's preseason finale.

The quarterback played the entire second half against New England, earning a 147.5 quarterback rating by going 17-for-20 for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

DeVito originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2023.

The quarterback was waived that August, then signed to the practice squad one day later.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported at the time that the Patriots had reached out about potentially having DeVito join their practice squad before he re-joined the Giants.

The decision to stay in New York ultimately paid off for DeVito, who was elevated and then officially signed to the active roster while Daniel Jones was sidelined by injury in October of that year.

DeVito ultimately made 12 appearances over his two seasons with the Giants, leading the team to a 3-5 record in eight starts.

With veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston on top of the Giants' depth chart and the franchise focused on developing Dart for the future, there was no more room for DeVito on the Giants' depth chart.

The Patriots released third-stringer Ben Wooldrige earlier this offseason, creating the opportunity for DeVito to play a depth role on the Patriots' roster during Maye's rookie season.
