Adam Thielen's Updated Fantasy Football Draft Outlook After Vikings Trade

Mike ChiariAug 27, 2025

One of the NFL's most talented offenses added another notable piece Wednesday, as the Minnesota Vikings announced that they acquired veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen in a trade with the Carolina Panthers.

The Vikings confirmed a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Panthers agreed to send Thielen, a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to Minnesota for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick.

Thielen, who spent the first nine years of his NFL career with the Vikings from 2014 to 2022, figures to fill in as Minnesota's WR2 behind Justin Jefferson for the first three weeks of the season while Jordan Addison is suspended.

That could potentially put Thielen on the radar as a late-round pick in fantasy football leagues that deploy three starting receivers or multiple FLEX spots.

The 35-year-old Thielen enjoyed the greatest success of his career in Minnesota, earning back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2017 and 2018.

Thielen exceeded 1,200 receiving yards twice with the Vikings and had three seasons of nine touchdowns or more, including a career-high 14 in 2020.

He showed he still had plenty left in the tank over the past two seasons in Carolina as well, starting with the 2023 campaign when he recorded 103 catches for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns, reaching the 100-catch mark for the second time in his career and the 1,000-yard threshold for the third time.

After getting off to a bit of a slow start through three games last season, Thielen landed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and missed the next seven games.

He returned to play the final seven games of the 2024 campaign and impressed, racking up 40 grabs for 506 yards and four touchdowns during that stretch.

Over the last six games of the season, Thielen was targeted six or more times in each game and had five or more catches in each game, plus he delivered 99 or more receiving yards in three of those games.

The underlying numbers also supported the notion that Thielen was still highly productive last season, as he led all receivers in expected points added (EPA) per target and had the highest average separation score on go routes among wideouts last season, according to The 33rd Team and Fantasy Points Data:

Thielen became a favorite target for Panthers quarterback Bryce Young last season, and he was essentially the No. 1 option in the passing game since Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker were rookies, and 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan hadn't yet been drafted.

In Minnesota, Thielen certainly won't be the top target with a superstar receiver in Jefferson ahead of him. He may also be behind tight end T.J. Hockenson in the pecking order, along with Addison once the latter returns from suspension.

On top of that, Thielen has yet to build a rapport with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who will be the Vikings' starter this season.

Thielen's previous success in Minnesota came with Kirk Cousins as his quarterback, and there is no guarantee he will have the same connection with McCarthy.

Given his play late last season and familiarity in Minnesota, it is understandable to use a fantasy pick on Thielen in the closing rounds of deep leagues, but his ceiling isn't particularly high given the depth of talent he'll have to share targets with.

The biggest beneficiaries of the Thielen trade from a fantasy perspective may be Legette and Coker, who will now battle for the WR2 job behind McMillan in Carolina.

Legette and Coker and both worth late-round looks in fantasy now with Coker perhaps being the smarter bet in full point-per-reception leagues since he is the top candidate to occupy the slot position vacated by Thielen.
