Adam Thielen Traded to Vikings From Panthers for Multiple NFL Draft Picks
The Minnesota Vikings finally made the trade everyone has been expecting after agreeing to a deal with the Carolina Panthers for Adam Thielen.
On Wednesday, the two teams finalized a trade that will send Thielen, a conditional 2026 seventh-round draft pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick.
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the deal.
His wife, Caitlan, added fuel to the fire with some vague posts on social media.
When no deal materialized prior to the deadline for teams to cut their rosters down to 53 players on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, it seemed like talks between the Panthers and Vikings broke down.
One sticking point may have been Carolina's asking price for Thielen. Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported on Tuesday there were rumors of the Panthers seeking a third-round draft pick.
Given all of the issues Minnesota has at wide receiver right now, working out a deal for Thielen before the start of the season makes sense.
Justin Jefferson has returned to practice after missing nearly a month due to a hamstring injury. All indications are he will be fine and ready to go in Week 1.
Behind Jefferson, though, things are murky. Jordan Addison will miss the first three games of the season due to a suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters on Aug. 18 that Jalen Nailor is "week to week" due to a hand injury. His status for Week 1 is unclear right now.
Thielen can step in right away in a system he knows very well. The 35-year-old spent the first nine years of his career with the Vikings, including one season overlapping with O'Connell in 2022.
Despite being in his mid-30s, Thielen has remained a productive player out of the slot. He finished the 2024 season with 615 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games for the Panthers.
As the Vikings prepare for the start of the J.J. McCarthy era at quarterback, having as many quality pass-catching options available will make his adjustment period easier.
The Vikings will kickoff the 2025 regular season against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 8 in the Monday Night Football opener.
