Texans HC Ryans Hypes Growth of CJ Stroud, Offense, 'The Progress Has Been Great'

Doric SamAug 27, 2025

The start of the 2025 season is quickly approaching, and Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is more than pleased with how the team's offense has developed over the offseason.

"The progress has been great," Ryans told ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime. "From where we started in camp to where we are now, to see the way guys are handling and guys are playing faster … I think our process has been really good."

The Texans replaced offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik with former Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots staff member Nick Caley. Bien-Aime noted that Houston "completely revamped the 22nd-ranked offense" in hopes of making life easier for star quarterback C.J. Stroud as he enters his third season in the NFL.

While the Texans introduced a host of new faces in their receiving corps like veterans Christian Kirk and Braxton Berrios and Iowa State rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, Stroud believe the changes will pay off. He said he's particularly looking forward to having more ownership of the offense and the ability to make audibles on the field, something that was limited for him in his first two years.

"It's exciting, it's very great," Stroud said of the new offense. "[Caley] comes from a different style than I'm used to, at least in the NFL. So, it's cool just to learn something new and put another tool in my toolbox. Being able to see things that maybe coaches don't see. Being on the field, I'm able to have a different point of view. I think that'll be helpful for our guys."

Stroud and the Texans will get to test out their new offense when they open the 2025 season against the Rams on Sept. 7.
