Brenden Rice, Son of NFL Legend Jerry, Cut By Chargers Ahead of NFL Roster Deadline
The Los Angeles Chargers announced Tuesday that wideout Brenden Rice, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, was waived as the team made the needed cuts to finalize the 53-man active roster.
Rice was a seventh-round pick of the Chargers in the 2024 NFL draft.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo noted Monday that "a spot on the practice squad is possible" for Rice if he clears waivers.
He was one of five receivers let go by the Chargers in roster cuts, joining Jalen Reagor, Jaylen Johnson (injury settlement), Dalevon Campbell, Luke Grimm and JaQuae Jackson.
The 23-year-old Rice appeared in just three games during his rookie season, registering no stats. The offseason additions of veteran Keenan Allen and rookies Tre' Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, however, left Rice with an uphill battle to make the roster.
With Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston returning as the top two options at receiver and Derius Davis always likely to make the team as a returner, the Chargers found themselves with a roster crunch at the position. Rice was among many players who didn't make the cut.
He didn't flash in the preseason, either, registering just three catches for 32 yards across four games (10 total targets). He did have his moments during training camp:
But the Chargers simply had better options at wideout. It remains to be seen if he'll emerge on another roster or find a home on a practice squad.
