Venus Williams to Play US Open Doubles After Elimination From Women's Singles Bracket

Scott PolacekAug 26, 2025

Fans in New York will have another opportunity to see Venus Williams take the court at the 2025 U.S. Open.

While the tennis legend lost in three sets to No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova in Monday's singles match, ESPN's D'Arcy Maine reported she was awarded a wild-card entry into the women's doubles draw Tuesday.

She is partnering with 2021 U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez.

Williams' return to professional tennis after a 16-month absence has been one of the biggest storylines in the sport this year.

She returned at the Citi Open and turned heads by defeating 35th-ranked Peyton Stearns. By winning at 45 years old, Williams became the oldest woman to prevail in a WTA match since 47-year-old Martina Navratilova in 2004.

She also played at the Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament but lost in the first round.

Yet Williams found some of her vintage form during Monday's match against Muchova and put on a show for the crowd as she captured the second set before losing in the third. In doing so, she became the oldest person to participate in the singles tournament at the U.S. Open since 1981.

At this point, anything Williams does is only adding to her legacy as one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport. She is a seven-time Grand Slam champion, 49-time singles champion and five-time Olympic medalist.

What's more, she is plenty accomplished as a doubles player and won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals while playing alongside her sister, Serena.

She will look to add to that resume in the 2025 U.S. Open when she and Fernandez take on Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez in the first round.
