Sam Hartman Reportedly Waived by Commanders, Could Return on Practice Squad
Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Hartman reportedly will have another shot to continue his development with the team.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that the Commanders are waiving Hartman as part of their roster cuts, but he's "expected" to return to their practice squad if he clears waivers.
Hartman joined the Commanders as an undrafted rookie free agent prior to the 2024 season. He spent most of the year on the team's practice squad after being waived last August, and he had a brief promotion to the active roster in September to backup veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota while star signal-caller Jayden Daniels was injured. The team signed him to a reserve/future contract in January.

Hartman played in all three of Washington's preseason games but failed to show any signs of improvement. He completed 25 of his 46 passes for 207 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions.
Before making the jump to the NFL, Hartman had a six-year college career that included five seasons at Wake Forest before spending his final year of eligibility with Notre Dame. He threw 134 touchdowns against 49 interceptions during his collegiate tenure.
The Commanders have one of the fastest-rising stars in the NFL with Daniels, who was named Offensive Rookie of the Year last season. Washington retained Mariota and fellow veteran Josh Johnson to be his primary backups, giving the team a reliable structure at the quarterback position. Hartman could have the chance to remain with the talented crop of signal-callers as he continues his NFL dream.
