Yankees' Anthony Volpe Will Play 'Regularly' After Benching, Aaron Boone Says

Andrew PetersAug 25, 2025

Though New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone benched shortstop Anthony Volpe ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Boston Red Sox, he said that the move is not permanent.

Per The Athletic's Brendan Kuty, Boone said Volpe will play "regularly" after Monday's game against the Washington Nationals, adding that he wants Volpe to use Sunday and Monday as a "reset," calling him "our shortstop."

The benching came amid a 1-for-28 slump for Volpe, who said it's on his way back to the lineup.

"As a competitor and as someone that takes pride and wants to be out there every day, you just take it on the chin and you look for the positives," Volpe told reporters. "If I do what I got to do, it'll be what it is. So, it's all on me."

Volpe, who has started 125 games at shortstop this season, is hitting .208 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs in 129 games this year. Monday will be just the sixth game that he has not started for the Yankees.

New York had won seven of its last eight games heading into its series against the Red Sox over the weekend, but dropped three of four games to its rival. The Yankees are 70-60 going into this week's series against the Nationals, holding the second wild card spot in the American League.
