Medvedev was on the verge of losing in straight sets when the incident occurred. He felt Bonzi's first serve should have counted, and he didn't hold back when he approached the umpire.
"Are you a man? Are you a man? Why are you shaking? What's wrong?" Medvedev asked the umpire. He then yelled directly into the camera, "Guys, he wants to leave. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour."
Amid the controversy, the match was delayed for a lengthy amount of time while Medvedev's supporters booed loudly and refused to adhere to requests to quiet down.
Medvedev managed to avoid a straight-sets loss and win the third set 7-6 (5) to continue the match. He seemed to find his footing and took a 3-0 lead in the fourth set.
Medvedev is a former World No. 1 who is ranked No. 13 in the US Open, while Bonzi is unranked. Medvedev won the US Open in 2021.
