Patriots Reportedly Shopping Kyle Dugger on Trade Market After Demotion to 2nd Team
The New England Patriots are reportedly "shopping" safety Kyle Dugger, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, after demoting him to the second unit on defense this summer following offseason surgery for a high-ankle sprain
Per that report, "While Dugger thrived in New England and eventually earned a four-year, $58 million contract extension, the new staff appears to view him differently."
Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported last week that the Patriots were open to potentially moving Dugger, though he added that his contract was an impediment for acquiring teams:

Jaylinn Hawkins and Jabrill Peppers seem likely to be the starting duo at safety for the Patriots come the regular season, though rookie Craig Woodson has seen some run with the first-team unit as well.
Dugger, 29, started 65 games for the Patriots between the 2020-24 seasons, registering nine interceptions, three defensive touchdowns, 424 tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 3.5 sacks. He struggled at times last year playing through injuries, however, and with a new coaching staff in place, some roster turnover was always a possibility.
"I understand it's a business," Dugger told ESPN's Mike Reiss regarding his place on the roster. "I have to prepare for the good, the bad, and whatever happens. So, I'm just trying to be present wherever I'm at. I'm not trying to think about the future."
Head coach Mike Vrabel, meanwhile, was asked by reporters earlier in August what Dugger would need to do to regain his starting gig.
"Just making sure that he's where he needs to be and understanding the coverage concepts and everything we do," he responded. "Keep working and keep progressing. A lot of this is that guys have earned the right to take a look with that first unit and, again, there will be different lineups and different things. Just focus on the reps that you get right now."
At this point, however, it sounds as though the Patriots are willing to move on altogether if they can find a team willing to take on Dugger's contract.
