Raiders' Aidan O'Connell Out 6-8 Weeks with Injury, Cam Miller QB2 Behind Geno Smith

Joseph ZuckerAug 24, 2025

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell will miss the start of the 2025 NFL season after suffering a fractured right wrist in Saturday's 20-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Head coach Pete Carroll told reporters that O'Connell could miss six to eight weeks.

His absence leaves sixth-round draft pick Cam Miller as the only backup alternative to starter Geno Smith ahead of Week 1.

Miller appeared in all three of the team's preseason games. Altogether, he went 20-of-37 for 203 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The 24-year-old spent five seasons at North Dakota State. He started out as Trey Lance's backup in 2020 and ascended to the starting role in 2021. He finished with 9,720 passing yards and 81 touchdowns while running for 2,277 yards and another 48 scores.

Miller was the No. 14 quarterback in Bleacher Report's final big board ahead of the 2025 NFL draft.

Smith is locked in as the starter after Las Vegas acquired him for a third-round pick in March. Shortly after the trade, he got a two-year extension worth $75 million.

The backup situation is more fluid with news of O'Connell's injury.

While the former Purdue star didn't look great during his starting appearances in 2023 and 2024, he at least has experience in the role. The coaching generally knew what to expect from him if he were pressed into duty for an injured Smith.

That luxury doesn't exist with Miller, raising the question of whether the Raiders try to sign another quarterback prior to their opener against the New England Patriots on Sept. 7.
