Browns HC Explains Exchange With Shedeur Sanders After Pulling QB for Tyler Huntley

Paul KasabianAug 23, 2025

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and quarterback Shedeur Sanders had a sideline exchange after the signal-caller was pulled with two minutes left in the Browns' 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday to close the preseason.

Stefanski was asked about the moment after the game.

He also explained to reporters why he chose to pull Sanders.

"Obviously we didn't play great as an offense in the second half, that's never on one person. So we can be better in a bunch of areas. Just felt like we wanted to give Snoop (Huntley) a last run."

Sanders had a rough outing against the Rams, completing 3-of-6 for 14 yards and taking five sacks.

Sanders led the Browns on five second-half drives, none of which ended with points. The Rams took a 17-16 lead with 2:03 left after a Jordan Waters two-yard run, giving the ball back to the Browns.

Huntley, who joined the Browns during training camp after the team dealt with numerous injuries to the QB room, took over and led Cleveland down the field on a six-play, 46-yard drive capped by Andre Szmyt's 37-yard game-winning field goal. The Browns were helped by a few penalties on that drive.

Sanders was a fifth-round pick in the NFL draft after largely being considered a first-rounder by many prognosticators in the lead-in to late April. He was the second quarterback taken by Cleveland in the draft after Oregon's Dillon Gabriel went in the third round.

Sanders looks to be QB4 in Cleveland behind starter Joe Flacco, veteran Kenny Pickett and Gabriel, but he isn't concerned about not making the team. However, he also said that camp was "great" and a learning experience as well.

Sanders did fare quite well in his other preseason appearance, completing 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His preseason did end on a low note, but he does have that positive takeaway to hold onto as he learns and develops during his rookie year.
