Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk Reportedly Had Surgery, Return Timeline From Injury TBD

The Florida Panthers will reportedly kick off their quest for a third straight Stanley Cup without one of the faces of the franchise.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported Friday that left-winger Matthew Tkachuk underwent surgery this offseason and will be sidelined for the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Pagnotta noted the "timeline is unclear, but he could be out of action as long as sometime in January."

ESPN's Greg Wyshynski later confirmed Pagnotta's report.

Tkachuk possibly being out into January is notable for a number of reasons, including in regards to the 2026 Olympics.

He was one of the leaders of the United States team during last season's 4 Nations Face-Off that saw the Americans reach the championship game before losing to Canada. A rematch could be in store for the 2026 Games, but it wouldn't have quite the same feel if he wasn't available.

That timeline suggests he will, though, as the Olympics are in February. Still, he wouldn't have much lead up time before taking the ice for his country if he is sidelined for months.

He also might miss the Winter Classic between the Panthers and New York Rangers on Jan. 2 with this timeline.

Tkachuk played at least 79 games for three seasons in a row ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, including when he appeared in all 82 as a member of the Calgary Flames in 2021-22 season. However, he was limited to just 52 games last season.

That didn't stop the two-time All-Star from dominating at the most important time.

He finished with 23 points (15 assists and eight goals), five power play goals and a plus-minus mark of plus-seven in 23 playoff games for the Panthers as they lifted the Stanley Cup. It was another brilliant performance after he posted 22 points in 24 postseason games for the 2023-24 champions.

In a perfect world for the Panthers, something similar will happen next season.

Tkachuk can miss some time as long as he is healthy and back for the playoffs, when he has shown a penchant for delivering with the Stanley Cup on the line. If that happens again, these early season injury concerns would be a distant memory for a celebratory Florida squad.
