Dolphins' Jack Jones Says Amon-Ra St. Brown 'Cooked Me' in Lions Joint Practice

Adam WellsAug 21, 2025

If the media reaction from the joint practices between the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions wasn't alarming enough for fans in South Florida, Jack Jones admitted he got worked in his assignment against Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Jones told reporters on Wednesday that St. Brown "cooked me," though he used it as an opportunity to highlight ways he can improve before the start of the season.

"I knew it was going to be the best work out there possible," Jones said. "You've seen the tape, he cooked me. But I got better from that, and I'm learning the technique that I'm not used to doing. He made me better, so I'd rather it be him than anyone else."

Miami and Detroit held two joint practices last week, leading up to their preseason game on Aug. 16. The St. Brown-Jones battle was documented in a highlight video posted on X by the Lions.

If Jones getting worked by one of the best receivers in the NFL was the only notable takeaway from those practices, it probably wouldn't have drawn a lot of attention.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, Jones' woes seemed to be emblematic of everything that was happening on the practice field for those two days.

There are a ton of question marks for the Dolphins going into the regular season. Their offense is already banged up, with De'Von Achane nursing a calf injury that will keep him out of practice the rest of this week. Tyreek Hill sat out Wednesday's practice as he continues to deal with an oblique injury.

Jones is on track to start the season as Miami's top cornerback, so losing like he did against St. Brown doesn't alleviate any concerns about the pass defense. He did look much better this week in practice, including breaking up a pass that led to an interception on Wednesday.

If the Dolphins can get that version of Jones on a consistent basis during the season, their defense could be better than anticipated. They have a solid front four that could look really good if Chop Robinson takes another step forward after a promising rookie season.

Jones and the secondary will be a defining story for the Dolphins in 2025. He is entering his fourth season in the NFL, having previously played for the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders.

Miami will open the regular season against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 7.
