While it's only preseason, Williams' outing against the Bills showed lots of promise. He completed six of his 10 passes, recording 107 yards and a touchdown. Bears coach Ben Johnson said Sunday's performance was a testament to the offseason Williams had.
"He's really been locked in," Johnson said, per ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "Anytime you're a young player, there's usually a couple of steps forward and one step back. And that's really been the story of this training camp. He and I have been really open and honest about it as we've gone through. And he's had some really good practices, and he's had a couple where, it's not good enough.
"I thought really the three days of practice we had this week and this game were the most he's stacked up good days in a row right now. The challenge is going to be keep pushing that direction."
As a rookie, Williams threw for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. It was by no means a bad start to his NFL career, but the former No. 1 overall pick was likely hoping for a bit more.
Now he's playing under a head coach who put together a dominant offense with the Detroit Lions over the last three years, and Williams appears ready to give the Bears a modern offense.
