NFL Insider Says Bengals' Possible Trade Return for Trey Hendrickson Hurt by Waiting

Doric SamAug 17, 2025

The Cincinnati Bengals are now exploring the trade market to solve their ongoing impasse with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson, but some around the NFL reportedly feel that it's already too late.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that a league source "strongly believes" the Bengals would've netted more significant compensation in a trade for Hendrickson if they had moved him earlier in the spring. The four-time Pro Bowler is known to be seeking a new contract, but Russini noted that teams would be facing potential salary cap obstacles if they acquire him and sign him to a new deal this late into training camp.

Russini and Paul Dehner Jr. reported earlier on Sunday that the Bengals "have been actively engaged in trade discussions" involving Hendrickson "for weeks." Teams that have spoken to Cincinnati said the team isn't only seeking draft capital in return but also wants defensive players to replace Hendrickson.

After leading the NFL with 17.5 sacks last year, Hendrickson has remained locked into his stance that he deserves a contract extension as he enters the final year of his current deal. He hasn't participated in a single practice this offseason during OTAs and training camp.

The Bengals don't appear to be willing to meet Hendrickson's contract demands, so a trade could be the only resolution. However, it sounds like it won't be easy to find a viable landing spot for the star edge rusher as the start of the 2025 season gets closer.
