John Metchie III Reportedly Traded to Eagles, Texans Get TE, NFL Draft Pick Swap
After spending the first three years of his career with the Houston Texans, wide receiver John Metchie III is reportedly on the move.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Texans traded Metchie to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
Schefter added that the Eagles sent tight end Harrison Bryant and a fifth-round pick to the Texans in exchange for Metchie and a sixth-round pick.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the San Francisco 49ers were also pursuing a trade for Metchie, but the Eagles "made a better offer."
Metchie now joins a stacked wide receiver room that also includes three-time Pro Bowler A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson. Metchie and Smith were teammates together at Alabama, so he will undoubtedly be looking forward to reuniting with the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner.
A second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Metchie has yet to reach his full potential at the professional level, largely due to health issues. He was forced to miss his entire rookie season after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. After returning to the field in 2023, he received the 2024 George Halas Award from the Pro Football Writers of America for overcoming adversity.
In 29 career games over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Metchie has totaled just 40 catches for 415 yards and one touchdown. He showed what he's capable of in his final year at Alabama in 2021 when he finished with 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns.
Metchie will certainly be looking forward to the opportunity to join the reigning Super Bowl champions as the Eagles gear up to chase a second straight title.
