Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery on Wrist Injury

Scott PolacekAug 17, 2025

The Boston Red Sox will have to make the rest of their 2025 playoff push without third baseman Marcelo Mayer.

Manager Alex Cora revealed Sunday that Mayer will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury that requires surgery, per Christopher Smith of Mass Live. It is expected to be a three-month recovery period, meaning he will at least be available for spring training ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Mayer hasn't played since a July 23 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, and Colin Keane of NESN noted he and the Boston medical team initially decided against season-ending surgery with the hope he could return.

He even received a cortisone shot to help manage the pain, but he will not be on the field again until 2026.

That means the 22-year-old ended up playing just 44 games in his rookie season and slashed .228/.272/.402 with four home runs and 10 RBI. He was versatile enough to play third base and second base, which gave the team more options in the daily lineup, but the hope is he will be better in 2026.

After all, he was Boston's top prospect and the No. 15 overall prospect in all of baseball in MLB.com's 2024 prospect rankings.

The Red Sox still have Alex Bregman at third base and Ceddanne Rafaela at second base and are accustomed to playing without Marcelo at this point. Still, he is an important part of their future and will miss the stretch run of what would have been his first playoff chase.

Boston is five games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East, but it is tied with the Seattle Mariners for the top two of three AL wild-card spots. It is 1.5 games ahead of the rival New York Yankees and four games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.

The Red Sox finish a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Sunday before 10 straight games against the Baltimore Orioles and Yankees.
