Rams Decline Comment on Whether Matthew Stafford Worked Out Saturday amid Back Injury

Timothy RappAug 16, 2025

The Los Angeles Rams declined to answer media questions regarding whether Matthew Stafford worked out on Saturday, which head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Thursday was the plan.

"We're trying to get our hands around this as well, so I don't really have much more information other than think we're trying some different things that are hopefully going to be in alignment with getting him back out on the field," McVay told reporters at the time about Stafford's aggravated disk.

Stafford previously held a workout on Aug. 9. He did not practice this week.

The Rams have been projecting confidence about Stafford's availability for the start of the regular season, as ESPN's Adam Schefter noted earlier this week, though if Stafford wasn't able to to work out on Saturday it's a concerning sign.

McVay previously told reporters that surgery hasn't yet been considered as an option.

"I haven't gone down that road yet in terms of those types of conversations," the coach said. "There's been a lot of conversations about what's the best method of how we want to approach it. That hasn't been something that comes up."

The 37-year-old Stafford threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions across 16 games last season, taking 28 sacks while completing 65.8 percent of his passes. He was 10-6 as the starter and led the Rams to the Divisional Round, where they lost a tight, snowy battle against the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

With plenty of young talent returning and Davante Adams added in the offseason, expectations were very high for the Rams heading into 2025. If Stafford isn't healthy, however, the team's upside will be severely diminished.
