Brandon Scherff Retired from NFL over Summer After 10 Seasons with Commanders, Jaguars

Zach BacharAug 14, 2025

Veteran guard Brandon Scherff revealed that he retired from the NFL during the summer after he was inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

“It’s been something I could never dream of,” Scherff said, per John Bohnenkamp of the school's website (h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk). “Sometimes I would tell my wife that she has to pinch me, because I’m playing a kid’s game, and being able to do it as a job is pretty amazing. Now, having kids and being able to see them after games is absolutely wonderful. So I would say it’s a dream come true. And I will be forever grateful to have had that chance.”

Scherff spent 10 seasons in the NFL from 2015-24, suiting up for the Washington Commanders and Jacksonville Jaguars.

He was initially selected by Washington with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft following a college career with the Hawkeyes in which he was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection.

Scherff immediately established himself as a key piece of the Commanders' offensive line, earning Pro Bowl honors during his second season in 2016. He went on to earn five Pro Bowl nods during his career and was named to the All-Pro first team for his 2020 campaign.

The 33-year-old struggled with injuries in the middle of his career despite remaining effective when healthy, suiting up in just 43 of a possible 65 regular-season contests from 2018-21. This included a season-ending torn pectoral in 2018.

Scherff eventually joined the Jaguars on a three-year, $49.5 million contract during the 2022 offseason and didn't miss a game during his tenure with the team.

According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed zero sacks and committed just two penalties in 1,013 snaps played last season.

Scherff became a free agent at the end of the year, but didn't sign with a team before eventually choosing to step away from the sport.
