Jordan Love 'Highly Unlikely' to Play More Preseason Snaps Amid Injury, per Packers HC

Paul KasabianAug 12, 2025

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is "highly unlikely" to play any more preseason games as he works his way back from a torn ligament in his left (non-throwing) thumb, an injury that will require surgery.

Head coach Matt LaFleur revealed that news to reporters Tuesday (h/t Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette).

"From what I’ve been understanding," LaFleur said, "it’s a pretty relatively quick recovery. So hopefully we’ll be able to get him back out in some capacity sometime next week to work on and work through, because I’ve never personally dealt with a situation like this. So there’s going to be some learning curve along the way in terms of how do we adapt and how do we adjust."

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that Love will not miss any regular-season time due to the surgery. Love will miss practice this week but is expected back next week.

The injury occurred after Love's left thumb made contact with the helmet of defensive tackle Jay Tufele amid a sack during the Packers' preseason home game against the New York Jets last Saturday.

The 26-year-old Love is entering his third season as the Packers' starting quarterback. The ex-Utah State star initially went 26th overall in the 2020 NFL draft and sat behind starter Aaron Rodgers for three seasons.

Love enjoyed a great first season as QB1, leading the Packers to the NFC Divisional round, including a resounding 48-32 upset over the No. 2 seed Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card round. He completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Love also did work on the ground (247 rushing yards and four scores).

Love's stats weren't as good last year, as he completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His rushing totals also regressed (83 yards and one touchdown).

However, Love sprained his MCL in the Packers' 2024 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles and missed two games. He also hurt his groin later in the season and played through it. Love talked about the season's trials and tribulations on the season during a chat with Kay Adams last February (h/t Zack Kruse of Packers Wire).

"Week 1, MCL. So that was the big one," Love said. "I was battling, missed two games with it, came back, came back early. And was fighting through that. It was a tough injury, one that limits you a little bit what you can mobility wise. Couple weeks after that, ended up straining my groin because of the knee. That whole thing just put a damper on things. It's something that you're, every week, every day in the facility you're doing the rehab trying to fight through and just get ready for the game. A lot of your mindset goes into trying to get your body right for it. It's tough. You're not 100 percent. But we know that no one is ever 100 percent in the NFL."

Unfortunately, Love now has to deal with another ailment, but thankfully, it doesn't appear that this one will affect him in the regular season, which begins for Green Bay on Sunday, Sept. 7 at home against the Detroit Lions.
