NFL OC Calls Patrick Mahomes 'Best QB to Ever Live,' Ranked No. 1 by Execs, Coaches

Zach BacharAug 11, 2025

Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes was ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the NFL and received high praise in a poll of 50 coaches and executives from around the league conducted by Mike Sando of The Athletic.

"I think Mahomes is the best quarterback to ever live, but the gap is smaller than it was a year ago," an offensive coordinator told Sando.

While Mahomes is coming off a 2024 campaign in which he averaged career-low marks with 245.5 passing yards per game and 6.8 yards per attempt, his track record still had him listed above his peers.

"Mahomes is the best quarterback in the world," a general manager said to Sando. "Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson had better individual seasons. In fairness, the infrastructure around Patrick has eroded."

Despite the two-time MVP's individual production, the Chiefs still finished with a 15-1 record and made a Super Bowl appearance largely due to the late heroics of the signal-caller. Mahomes led Kansas City on seven game-winning drives in the regular season and one in the playoffs.

"Patrick is obviously still a 1, but he is winning out of need at the end of games," a head coach told Sando. "That is what it's about, but Burrow, Lamar and Josh played better than him in quarters one through four."

Mahomes has already put together a legendary NFL career at just 29 years old with three championships, three Super Bowl MVP awards, six Pro Bowl nods and an Offensive Player of the Year award to go along with his pair of MVPs.

He's continued to make history on an annual basis, becoming the fastest quarterback to reach 30,000 total passing yards in Week 8 of the 2024 season.

"Criticizing him is like walking into the Sistine Chapel and saying, 'I like Michelangelo's drawings, but his sense of color is off,'" a defensive coach with AFC West experience said.

As Mahomes enters his ninth NFL season, he's still viewed as the top player at his position.
