Colts' Anthony Richardson Reportedly Set to Practice After Injury in Preseason Opener

Adam WellsAug 9, 2025

Anthony Richardson's dislocated finger suffered in the Indianapolis Colts' preseason opener on Thursday won't prevent him from getting right back into the quarterback competition with Daniel Jones.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Richardson plans to practice with the team on Saturday after getting the start for Indianapolis against the Baltimore Ravens.

Richardson started against the Ravens and was expected to play most of the first half, but he was pulled on Indianapolis' second offensive possession when he injured his finger after being sacked by an unblocked David Ojabo.

ESPN's Stephen Holder reported on Friday that Richardson's X-rays came back negative, giving him a chance to return to practice as soon as Saturday.

"It'll be a little bit more so in the morning," Richardson told reporters after the game when asked about his pinkie. "But I'll be good."

Colts head coach Shane Steichen intended to give Richardson and Daniel Jones equal playing time in the first two preseason games as he continues to evaluate who will be the starter going into the regular season.

Richardson was going to play 1.5 quarters against the Ravens, with Jones playing the remainder of the first half. Jones is going to start the next preseason game against the Green Bay Packers and play 1.5 quarters, then Richardson will finish out the first half.

Since Jones wound up having to play most of the first half against Baltimore due to Richardson's injury, Steichen admitted his initial plan might have to be reevaluated.

"That's definitely the thing I'm going to look into because, obviously, Daniel got the bulk of the reps tonight," Steichen said on Thursday night.

Jones went 10-of-21 for 144 yards and led two drives that ended in field goals against the Ravens. They also had an opportunity for a third field goal late in the first half, but Spencer Shrader missed a 53-yard attempt.

The Colts will host the Packers at Lucas Oil Stadium in their second preseason game on Aug. 16.
