WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Addresses Sex Toys Being Thrown on Courts in Video

Zach BacharAug 7, 2025

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert discussed the sex toys that have been thrown onto courts during several recent regular-season games.

"It's unacceptable," Engelbert said during a Thursday appearance on Sportico Sports Business. "I'm almost in my 40th year in business and unfortunately we get these kinds of acts and it’s totally unacceptable. These people are trading whatever notoriety they're getting for a felony conviction. So, we have caught two of the guys and they're being charged with felonies and it doesn’t make any sense to me for whatever their little joy ride is."

"Hopefully it just ends with the fact that, if you want a felony conviction on your record, go ahead and do it," she added. "But obviously it can be very dangerous to throw anything, let alone what they are throwing."

Three such incidents have occurred during WNBA games in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Chicago. A sex toy was also tossed in the middle of a matchup between the Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Sun on Tuesday and ended up hitting a fellow spectator in the back, per the Associated Press.

Men have been arrested in Atlanta and Phoenix for the actions (via Sportico's Jacob Feldman). The Phoenix man was an 18-year-old who was charged with disorderly conduct, assault and public display of explicit sexual material.

In Atlanta, the 23-year-old man was arrested and reportedly faces counts of disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure and criminal trespass.
