Justin Fields, Jets' Starters to Play in NFL Preseason Opener vs. Packers

Doric SamAug 7, 2025

The New York Jets aren't holding anything back as they embark on their first year under new head coach Aaron Glenn.

On Thursday, Glenn declared to reporters that the Jets' starters, including quarterback Justin Fields, will play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Glenn added that how long the starters will be on the field on Saturday will be determined by their success in the game.

"I can't tell you how much guys are gonna play, it's affected by how the game goes, but we're playing," he said. When asked why he made the decision to play the starters, he simply responded, "Because I want to play. That's the reason."

This continues the stark contrast in philosophies between Glenn and New York's previous coaching regime, which typically rested the starters for most of the preseason. He also instituted live tackling in practice, something the team hasn't done since Rex Ryan was head coach from 2009-14, as he tries to change the culture of the Jets and build up the team's physicality.

While some players may gripe over playing in meaningless games, Fields made it clear that he welcomes the opportunity to see the field as much as possible before Week 1. The 26-year-old is in his third offensive system in the last three years, so it makes sense that he wants time to get used to his new teammates and coaches.

"I think we need to at least see the field each and every game," Fields said earlier this week when asked about playing in the preseason. "I think that will be good for our team, it will be good for [offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand] in the in-game stuff, it will be good for me, the guys on offense. I don’t think, I know some guys, they sit out the whole preseason, but I don’t think that’s the case for us. Just because of the new team, new offense, and stuff like that."
