2025 NFL Predictions for Dark-Horse Super Bowl Picks Certain to Surprise

Doric SamAug 8, 2025

After the 2024 season ended with the Philadelphia Eagles knocking off the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, the path to the title game seems more open than ever entering the 2025 campaign.

The league's current era has been defined by parity, as multiple teams have a legitimate chance to represent their respective conference in the Super Bowl.

However, beyond the long list of favorites who typically pop up in Super Bowl predictions, there are also some surprise teams that will emerge as contenders if everything falls into place.

Let's take a look at three teams that could have a surprising run to the Big Game on the horizon despite not being among the top 10 teams in Super Bowl odds, courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.

Minnesota Vikings (+2800)

The Minnesota Vikings are moving forward with a virtual rookie starting quarterback, as 2024 No. 10 pick J.J. McCarthy is taking the reins after missing his entire first year in the NFL due to a torn meniscus that required season-ending surgery.

However, McCarthy is stepping into a situation built for success, as the Vikings retained most of the core from last year's team that went 14-3 with journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold leading the way. And by most accounts, McCarthy hasn't been looking like a rookie as Minnesota gears up for the 2025 season.

The 22-year-old will certainly benefit from having arguably the best receiver in the league on the outside, as Justin Jefferson almost singlehandedly revived Darnold's career last season on his way to finishing with 103 catches for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns. It was his fifth straight 1,000-yard season in his five-year career, and he will be looking to work his magic with McCarthy under center.

Minnesota also boasts one of the best coaching tandems in the NFL with head coach Kevin O'Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores, the latter of whom decided to stay put after drawing significant interest from teams searching for a head coach this offseason.

It can be expected that there will be growing pains for McCarthy as he embarks on his first healthy season, but the Vikings are built to weather the storm and make a deep run this year.

Los Angeles Chargers ( 2800)

In their first year under head coach Jim Harbaugh, the Los Angeles Chargers went 11-6 and earned a trip to the playoffs. Expectations should be even higher for the Bolts in 2025.

It was clear last season that the Chargers made a concerted effort to take pressure off star quarterback Justin Herbert. His 504 pass attempts were the second-lowest of his career despite playing in all 17 games. He threw for 3,870 yards, 23 touchdowns and a career-low three interceptions, so Los Angeles will likely use a similar approach this year.

The Chargers signed former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris and also used the No. 22 pick in this year's draft to select former North Carolina Omari Hampton, who rushed for over 1,500 yards in both 2023 and 2024. The team also added more weapons for Herbert by selecting former Ole Miss wide receiver Tre Harris in the second round and re-signing veteran wideout Keenan Allen.

Not to be overlooked is Los Angeles' defense, which made a massive leap under Harbaugh from allowing 23.4 points per game in 2023 to leading the league with just 17.7 points allowed per game last season.

The loss of offensive tackle Rashawn Slater to a season-ending ruptured patella tendon will make the road a bit more difficult, but if things go well in Hollywood this year, the Chargers could challenge the Chiefs for the AFC West crown and chase a spot in the Super Bowl.

Houston Texans (+3500)

After winning back-to-back AFC South titles, the Houston Texans should have their eyes set on reaching even greater heights in star quarterback C.J. Stroud's third year.

The Texans have the advantage of playing in arguably the easiest division in the NFL. The Tennessee Titans finished with the worst record in the league last season and will be leaning on a rookie starting quarterback in 2025 No. 1 pick Cam Ward. The Indianapolis Colts still don't know whether signal-caller Anthony Richardson is the answer. The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't been able to find the right formula around star quarterback Trevor Lawrence and will be playing under a first-time head coach in Liam Coen.

Stroud and company should be ready to feast on their division rivals, and it should help bring out the best in them when they face the rest of the NFL. Houston added even more depth on offense by acquiring veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk and signing veteran running back Nick Chubb. Adding them behind running back Joe Mixon and receiver Nico Collins should make life even easier for Stroud.

While the 23-year-old didn't put up the same numbers in 2024 as his historic rookie season, he's still one of the most promising young players in the NFL. The Texans also boast one of the best defensive units in the league, ranking fifth with 315.0 yards allowed per game last season.

There will be some tests along the way, but Houston could find itself knocking on the door of title contention if they manage to pass with flying colors.
