Justin Fields, Jets' Passing Struggles in Camp Downplayed By Aaron Glenn, 'It's Early'
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn downplayed any potential concerns about quarterback Justin Fields and the team's passing game amid some significant struggles during recent training camp practices.
According to SNY's Connor Hughes, Glenn said, "I don't because it's early," when asked Tuesday if he has any uneasiness about the Jets' passing attack.
In a post on X on Tuesday morning, Hughes highlighted Fields' lack of efficiency over the Jets past three practices:
Then, in a later post, Hughes noted that Fields went 9-of-17 with two interceptions during Tuesday's practice, while also taking three sacks and failing to complete a pass longer than five air yards.
Hughes added that Fields is 15-for-43 with two picks in the Jets' full-team work over their last three practices.
Last season, future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers put up solid numbers for the Jets, completing 63.0 percent of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, however, New York disappointed with a 5-12 record.
As a result, the Jets cleaned house, making changes at head coach, general manager and quarterback.
The Jets did not select a quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft, instead opting to go with Fields, who they signed to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency.
Fields is still just 26 years old, and he was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears.
In three seasons with the Bears, Fields never quite managed to establish himself as the franchise guy, going 10-28 as a starter and throwing 40 touchdown passes compared to 30 interceptions.
He did plenty of damage with his legs, though, rushing for 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns, including a career-high 1,143 yards and eight scores in 2022.
When they decided to select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he began 2024 as Pittsburgh's starter while Russell Wilson was out injured.
Fields went a solid 4-2 as the Steelers' starter and threw only one interception, but he also threw for just 1,106 yards and five touchdowns, as he played it safe and tried to avoid turning the ball over.
The Steelers let Fields walk in free agency and eventually signed Rodgers, so they essentially ended up swapping quarterbacks with the Jets.
New York is in the midst of the NFL's longest active playoff drought, having not made it since 2010, and they are not considered a strong bet to end the drought in 2025.
That could change if Fields starts to reach his potential and become a complete quarterback, but early returns in training camp suggest that may not be a likely scenario.
Glenn seems committed to Fields as the starter for now, but if things don't get better, he could always turn to 36-year-old backup Tyrod Taylor, who is 28-28-1 as an NFL starter and led the Buffalo Bills to the playoffs in 2017.
