Jaguars HC Says Travis Hunter Can Win Offensive, Defensive ROY, Talks Snap Count Plan

Scott PolacekAug 4, 2025

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen isn't shying away from expectations for rookie Travis Hunter.

"I do think it's possible," he said Monday during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show (8:10 in video) when discussing the chance Hunter could win the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards.

"He is committed to driving not just himself but his teammates as well. And I think his teammates … these guys are challenging him every single day. He doesn't get a free pass because he was the second overall pick and he's Travis Hunter. … It's truly iron sharpening iron. That's what it feels like, and I wouldn't expect anything less from those guys. They've all been on board that they think he can do it as well, but they're going to make him earn it."

Here's where Hunter was listed on the Jaguars' unofficial depth chart on Monday:

Hunter certainly proved he can thrive on both sides of the ball at a high level when he took home the Heisman Trophy during the 2024 campaign at Colorado.

While playing in the NFL will be a different challenge, he still managed to win the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a cornerback while tallying 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns as a wide receiver on the offensive side.

That type of production surely stood out to the Jaguars, who selected him with the No. 2 pick and have embraced the possibility of him playing on both sides.

In fact, Coen suggested to Eisen (4:20 mark) that Hunter could play approximately 80 percent of the snaps on each side of the ball. He also explained the team has done more work offensively in training camp.

"Offensively, we felt like there was a little more development that was necessary," he said. "And it's a lot more ball. It's a lot more scheme and words and calls. Every single day is completely packed from the moment he arrives to the moment he leaves."

If he ends up playing close to 80 percent of the snaps on each side of the ball during the regular season, the packed training camp days will be exactly what he needs to prepare for the demands of his rookie season.

And it may be what he needs to live up to the ever-building hype and take home two different Rookie of the Year awards.
