Tyreek Hill Suggests Dolphins Take De'Von Achane Out on 3rd-and-Short amid Struggles

Zach BacharAug 1, 2025

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill expressed his belief that running back De'Von Achane shouldn't be playing on third down in short-yardage situations.

"Take De'Von [Achane] out on third down," Hill told reporters. "What? That's my honest opinion. If it's third and short, he's not a power back. I be telling him that in the locker room, but he swear he a power back. I love De'Von, but if I'm being honest, that's why you got Jaylen Wright, that's why you got Ollie Gordon. For those kind of situations."

Achane eventually responded to Hill in a post on X.

Achane is coming off a 2024 season in which he amassed 1,499 yards from scrimmage, serving as a threat both on the ground and through the air.

He used his speed to rush for 907 yards and average 4.5 yards per carry, although it represented a step down from his impressive average of 7.8 yards per attempt as a rookie in 2023.

To Hill's point, Achane particularly struggled in short-yardage situations. He received 34 carries on downs with one to three yards to gain last season, averaging just 1.7 yards per attempt and picking up 15 first downs (via Pro Football Reference).

Meanwhile, Jaylen Wright moved the sticks on two of his three carries in the same situations while averaging 6.7 yards per attempt.

While it's surprising for a player to call for his own teammate to receive less playing time, Hill remains confident that Achane shouldn't line up in the backfield in short-yardage scenarios.
