Jhoan Duran Takes No. 59 Phillies Jersey After Manager Rob Thomson Gives Up Number
New Philadelphia Phillies closer Jhoan Durán was able to keep his jersey number after experiencing a change of scenery ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
Durán asked Phillies manager Rob Thomson for his jersey No. 59 and the Phillies' skipper acquiesced, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).
Thomson will switch to wearing No. 49 instead, paying homage to former New York Yankees star Ron Guidry.

He detailed his conversation regarding the number with Durán.
"The number really doesn't mean much to me," Thomson said, via ESPN. "But if it makes you feel better, I'm all-in. He said, 'Yeah.' Then it's all yours."
The Phillies acquired Durán in a swap with the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, sending catching prospect Eduardo Tait and pitching prospect Mick Abel to Minnesota in return.
Durán wore No. 59 throughout each of his first four years with the Twins, quickly developing into their closer.
This season, he owns a 2.01 ERA and 1.176 WHIP to go along with 16 saves across 49 appearances. Durán has fanned opposing batters with his fastball and curveball throughout his tenure in Minnesota, owning a career average of 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
He should fill the Phillies' hole at closer and fortify their bullpen as they battle for the National League East lead, currently sitting 0.5 games behind the New York Mets for the No. 1 spot in the division with a 61-47 record.
