Yankees Reportedly Trade for Giants' Camilo Doval, Rays' Jose Caballero at Deadline

Andrew PetersJul 31, 2025

The New York Yankees got a few trades off in the final minutes before Thursday's MLB trade deadline.

Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Yankees landed San Francisco Giants reliever Camilo Doval. New York also traded for shortstop Jose Caballero of the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Passan.

Jack Curry of YES Network reported the return for Doval:

The Yankees added 18-year-old outfield prospect Wilberson De Pena from the Los Angeles Angels in return for Oswald Peraza, per YES Network's Jack Curry (h/t MLB.com).

Doval, who made his MLB debut in 2021, has spent his entire career with the Giants. He earned an All-Star nod in 2023 when he posted a 6-6 record with a 2.93 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a league-leading 39 saves.

This season, Doval is 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 50 strikeouts and 15 saves across 46.2 innings. The Yankees were looking to bolster their bullpen at the deadline, and they did just that by trading for Doval.

The 28-year-old is arbitration-eligible at the end of the season and is under club control until 2028, so the Yankees will have him around for a while if they want.

Along with Doval, New York picked up closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates and traded for setup pitcher Jake Bird from the Colorado Rockies.

While the Yankees brought in a handful of pitchers ahead of the deadline, they also added some position players. Earlier this week, New York traded for third baseman Ryan McMahon, utility man Amed Rosario and outfielder Austin Slater. On Thursday, they bolstered the infield further by dealing for Caballero.

Caballero, 28, made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners in 2023 and has been with the Rays since last season. In 85 games, the shortstop has a pair of homers and 27 RBI with a .226 batting average.

The Yankees came into Thursday 60-49 on the season, holding the top wild card seed, but they clearly needed to make some moves to compete deep into the postseason. Whether Thursday's additions will be enough for another World Series run remains to be seen.
