Shane Bieber Reportedly Traded to Blue Jays, Guardians Land Khal Stephen amid Rumors
The Shane Bieber era in Cleveland has reportedly come to a close.
According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Guardians agreed to trade the ace starting pitcher to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in exchange for 22-year-old pitching prospect Khal Stephen.
Bieber, 30, is a two-time All-Star and the 2020 Cy Young winner (asterisk the season-shortened achievement due to the COVID-19 pandemic if you want, but Bieber was 8-1 in 12 starts with a 1.63 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in 77.1 innings—that's an absurd run).

Injuries have become a bigger storyline in recent seasons, however.
Bieber made 21 starts in 2023, hampered by elbow issues that would eventually cut his 2024 season short after just two starts. Tommy John surgery followed, ending his season and keeping him out of action for all of the 2025 campaign to this point.
However, Bieber has made four minor-league rehab starts, posting a 1.59 ERA, which suggests his return to the major leagues could be on the horizon.
While trading for a player returning from that type of injury is a risk, the asking price was also likely lower than it would have been otherwise, paired with the fact that he may be a short-term rental (Bieber has a $16 million player option for 2026 that he potentially will decline, seeking a long-term deal in free agency).
Given that this trade deadline isn't exactly flush with proven aces on the move, taking a chance on a pitcher like Bieber—or talented but struggling options like Sandy Alcantara, Dylan Cease, Zac Gallen, etc.—was one of the better options for contending teams hoping to improve the rotation.
It's a risk, no doubt, but Bieber has the pedigree to be a real difference-maker for the Blue Jays down the stretch.
At 64-46, Toronto leads the American League East by four games and it is tied for the best record in the AL, perhaps making it the team to beat heading toward the playoffs.
