Jaguars' Travis Hunter Nicknames Himself 'The Unicorn' Ahead of Debut NFL Season

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter says he's already decided on his nickname before attempting to play on both offense and defense during his first NFL season.

"It's the Unicorn," the former college two-way star told CBS Sports' Pete Prisco on Tuesday.

Other people around the NFL, including Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry and former Jaguars running back Fred Taylor, have previously used that same word to describe Hunter's two-way abilities.

Hunter maintained throughout his senior season at Colorado and the pre-draft process that he could continue playing both wide receiver and cornerback in the NFL. He reiterated that belief in his Tuesday interview with Prisco.

"I definitely think I could play them all. If I didn't think I could play them all, I wouldn't be trying to do it," Hunter told Prisco.

When asked what made him believe he could accomplish the feat, Hunter answered, "Just my mental. You've got to have the right mindset going into it. You've got to have the right knowledge. You've got to understand what you're doing when you're going out there. You've got to understand how to take care of your body, too."

The Jaguars have so far alternated Hunter between a blue receiver uniform and a white defensive outfit throughout training camp.

The team dressed him as a wide receiver for the first two days of camp, played him as a cornerback for the next two and went back to wideout for the following two sessions, per Jaguars reporter Mia O'Brien.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said he expects Hunter to switch between the positions midway through an upcoming practice, according to O'Brien.

Hunter will be able to live up to his nickname if he can prove himself to be the only player in the current NFL who can take significant snaps on both offense and defense during his rookie season.

His first shot at game action as a two-way pro could come on Saturday, Aug. 9, when the Jaguars open the 2025 preseason against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers.
